13 Tips on saving money on groceries

Yes, you can really save on groceries! No, it is not hard to do! And, yes, saving a little bit each time will really add up.

Groceries are every day or every week expenses, which can be decreased by 10%, 20%, 30%, and even 40%. I compiled all kinds of realistic tips on saving on groceries, so everyone will be able to find something useful that will fit into their daily routine and will help them save money on groceries.

Tip #1 to saving money on Groceries -- Never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach.
When you are hungry, you tend to buy more groceries than you need to, more groceries than you can eat, and more groceries than you can afford to buy. Make sure to eat before you go grocery shopping and you'll save money just by doing so!

Tip #2 to saving money on Groceries -- Dress warmly.
It is always cold in grocery stores. One of the reasons is that when a person is cold, they want to eat, and start buying too many groceries. It sounds funny, but it’s true. Make sure to dress appropriately when you go grocery shopping!

Tip #3 to saving money on Groceries – Create a shopping list.
Go to the grocery store with the exact list of things to buy. It will help you shop economically rather than on impulse. Avoid putting other things that catch your eye in your cart, and you'll save money.

Tip #4 to saving money on Groceries – Try not to shop on impulse.
Avoiding spontaneous shopping trips to the grocery store is the best way to go when it comes to grocery shopping. Also, you can set a dollar limit on impulse buying.

Tip #5 to saving money on Groceries – Take advantage of coupons and rebates.
You can just go through the newspaper and clip coupons with the best grocery deals and rebates. Also, once you are at the grocery store, you can find a store newspaper with additional deals to take advantage of and save.

Tip #6 to saving money on Groceries – Comparative analysis.
When you read the price of an item to determine if it’s a good deal or not, you should also look at the unit price. The package price only tells you the cost of the entire grocery item. Don’t be fooled by the size of the package itself; it might weight a lot less then you would guess.

Tip #7 to saving money on Groceries – Check out the “expiration date”.
By checking out the “expiration date” you are making sure that you are getting the freshest products that won’t spoil sooner than you can consume them. Another tip is to look for products farther on the shelf; they might have a farther expiration date.

Tip #8 to saving money on Groceries – Beware of store’s tricks.
End of the isle dump bins, island displays, and “middle-shelf” items are usually higher priced and are there to draw attention of customers. Don’t get sucked in by those impulse products even if they say “on sale” since the reason those products are displayed that way is because manufacturers and distributors paid for that kind of an advertisement. If you know what the prices are and that particular product is really on sale, then you are safe to buy. Instead of looking at the “middle-shelf” which is at eye level, look at the top and bottom shelves for potential grocery bargains that would save you money.

Tip #9 to saving money on Groceries – Watch the scanner.
Cashiers make mistakes. If you watch the scanner and mistake is made, you can point out the mistake and save. Also, you watching the scanner will keep the cashier more alert. Also, keeping track of the prices will help you remembering what the prices are. When a grocery item is on sale next time you shop, you’ll be able to recognize the sale and buy more of the item on sale.

Tip #10 to saving money on Groceries – Pay with cash.
Many researches have identified that using cash rather than a credit card prevents you from buying things you don’t really need and helps you being aware of the prices. So, before going to the grocery store, make sure that you took money in cash that you are expecting to spend.

Tip #11 to saving money on Groceries – Avoid convenience items.
Convenience items such as prepared dinners or pre-made sandwiches are pricy. To save money, you are better off buying ingredients and cooking yourself.

Tip #12 to saving money on Groceries – Forget brand loyalty.
Try to buy generic, no name brands, when possible. Or, buy brands that are on sale rather than only a particular brand. If you are brand loyal, then you need to remember that you might have to wait 4 or more weeks until “your” brand will be on sale. So, you will have to buy enough to keep yourself stuffed until the next sale.

Tip #13 to saving money on Groceries – Avoid shopping to feel good.
If you are shopping as a stress relief or to make yourself happy, remember that there are many other ways to make yourself feel good. Wasting money on things you don’t need and can’t afford is something that should make you feel badly rather than good.
